Communications Specialist

COMMUNICATIONS SPECIALIST Reports to: Communications Director Location: Remote in California Status: Full-time with benefits Position Description Reporting to the Communications Director, the Communications Specialist will produce a variety of content to build The Climate Center’s visibility and engage our base of activists and donors. This position is focused on content production and strategy, main responsibilities include: 1) writing, editing, and designing compelling digital content; and 2) contributing to organizational content strategy that supports both advocacy, fundraising, and events. This position sits within our communications team and will work collaboratively across the organization, especially with our policy team.

Responsibilities

Content creation: Serve as The Climate Center’s primary writer, editor, and designer for digital content. Draft email, social media, SMS, and website copy in support of The Climate Center’s advocacy and fundraising goals. Draft press releases, op-eds, media advisories, letters to the editor, and other media materials in support of The Climate Center’s policy priorities. Draft blogs, LinkedIn posts, email newsletters, and other content to build the thought leadership of The Climate Center’s CEO and policy experts. In collaboration with the Engagement Manager, develop compelling content for The Climate Center’s social media channels. Event marketing: With direction from the Communications Director and Events Manager, create content to promote The Climate Center events, including regular webinars and our signature annual conference, the California Climate Policy Summit. Create promotion toolkits (including sample social media copy and graphics) for The Climate Center events and webinars. Other: Uphold The Climate Center’s values of ambition, collaboration, equity, inclusion, innovation, and responsibility. Assist with editorial planning and strategy. Maintain the organization’s content calendar. Assist staff across the organization with writing, editing, and building their visibility in traditional and social media. Other duties as assigned by the Communications Director. Required Skills and Experience Minimum of two years experience, preferably in nonprofit communications, fundraising, and/or an agency environment. Demonstrated experience creating original content that moves audiences to action. Excellent writing skills and attention to detail. Experience using Canva or similar tools to create graphic content. Familiarity with digital tools such as Google Drive, Zoom, and Asana, and/or the ability to learn new tools quickly. Excellent project management skills, with the ability to work independently when given clear direction. A commitment to creating an inclusive, supportive working environment. Bachelor's degree or equivalent work/volunteer experience preferred. Preferred Skills and Experience Familiarity with climate and environmental issues and/or California state politics preferred but not required. Basic video production and editing experience is preferred but not required. Comfort in producing Spanish-language content is preferred but not required. Salary and Benefits The salary range for this position is $72,000 to $80,000, dependent on skills and experience.
